About Sweetpea Farms
Kaitlyne Peden is the founder and heart behind Sweetpea Farms, a family-run farm just outside Vernon, BC. She grew up one of six children on a farm and has always had a deep love for animals.
Sweetpea Farms operates on the family’s land and specializes in raising happy pigs and pasture-raised poultry with respect, care, and transparency.
From morning sunrises watching chicks explore, to the quiet moments of farrowing, Kaitlyne is intimately involved in every step.
The Journey
What started as a simple dream on family land grew into a thriving small farm built on determination, community support, and a deep love of animals.
Kaitlyne’s path to farming professionally was born out of both passion and struggling to find work that tapped into her strengths, as she discovered Community Futures’ StartUP entrepreneurial training program.
There, she learned the business basics and everything from writing a business model canvas to managing cash flow and gained the confidence to formalize her dream.
With guidance and support, she secured a loan through Community Futures North Okanagan to fund infrastructure, livestock, and essential inputs.
From there, she began scaling carefully: in her first full year, she raised poultry and pigs, gradually increasing herd size while always prioritizing welfare, quality, and sustainability

Values & Philosophy
Kaitlyne believes farming should be honest, humane, and transparent. Every decision is guided by respect for animals, the land, and her customers — proving small-scale, ethical agriculture can make a real difference.
Here are a few guiding principles that shape every decision:
-
Ethical, small-scale farming as Kaitlyne and sweetpea Farms emphasizes doing things right over doing things fast. She knows that raising animals humanely, with room to roam and attentive care, comes with costs that must be carefully factored in.
-
Transparency & connection as She believes consumers deserve to know where their food comes from, how the animals lived, and what went into each product.
-
Continuous learning & adaptability as Kaitlyne is always experimenting, adjusting, and growing. She’s proud of her ability to problem-solve, adapt, and keep her vision grounded in reality.
-
Community & mentorship as Kaitlyne hopes to one day teach and mentor others who want to raise meat sustainably, drawing on her own journey.
Looking Forward
Sweetpea Farms is just getting started and building toward becoming a trusted name
Kaitlyne envisions workshops, on-farm processing, and closer community connections, expanding thoughtfully while staying true to the values that make her farm unique.
Here’s what’s next on the horizon for Kaitlyne and the future of Sweatpea Farms:
-
Offering meat cuts and meat boxes directly to customers to increase the value and connection.
-
Possibly expanding into on-farm processing (Farmgate Plus licensing) to better control her production chain.
-
Hosting workshops and supporting hobby farmers to elevate local, small-scale meat production.
-
Exploring gradual growth into new livestock (e.g. cattle) where it fits with the land and philosophy.
Above all, Kaitlyne approaches this work and her farm with gratitude for her animals, the land, her community, and each customer who values where their food comes from.
